Physical, Mental & Spiritual

لاَ ﺇِلَهَ ﺇِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ ﺇِنِّيْ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِيْنَ
Silat is an art of control. Not to control others but to control oneself physically and mentally. When one master the art of controlling oneself, the need to protect oneself when facing enemy will seem like one is controlling the fight and the enemy. Actually one is controlling oneself so perfect so that one's body will not be harm in any way the threat that been delivered.

It is not a skill of controlling others but it is an interpretation of self control. Learning and mastering Silat is actually to realize and accept one’s weaknesses and embrace it so that it can be use to the advantage. We learn how to make specific move to protect our weak part of the body. We are forced to master weaponry skill to face against enemy with more strength or with weapon.

If we are so strong and mighty, we don't have to put so much effort in learning special skill to protect ourselves. Just let the enemy come and attack that can do no harm to our strong and impenetrable flesh. So in truth we learn any self defense techniques or Silat out of our obvious weaknesses.

In Islam, learning self defense is among the practice of Nabi Muhammad (saw) and his companion (ra.hum). It is essential for a Muslim to be able to protect oneself, family, one's belonging and country from any threat from any kind of enemies, seen or unseen. So it is among syariat to put enough effort in making sure the safety of whatever necessary around us. As Muslim, let this be the only physical intention in learning Silat. This will be the very basic effort in making sure our intention will not be cloud by bad inclination.

As Muslim, we learn Silat not to perfect our martial skill but to complete the practice of our syariat, thus elevate ourselves as Muslim. Previously I use the word mentally instead of spiritually because there is only one element that can be use to control the spiritual which is Islam teaching and practice.

Among the most important aspect of Islam that must be acquired by all Muslim is Taqwa. Mean fear only to Allah (swt) by fulfilling all His commands with hope towards His (swt) rahmat or blessing. Taqwa is important so that we can ensure our physical and spiritual action is right and on the right track. Taqwa will prevent us from making physical and spiritual mistake or sin because from taqwa one will fully obey Allah (swt).

Taqwa will cultivate a true sense of serenity and tranquility. One will have no fear towards creations. No fear with proper action and compassion, action that base on the true teaching and practice of Islam. One will have hope only to Allah (swt), truly and fully reliance to Allah (swt) which is tawakkal.

Tawakkal must come with proper physical and spiritual action that base on Islam teaching which is Allah (swt) command that is translated into the Sunnah of Nabi Muhammad (saw). What most important here is finding, learning, understanding and practicing the true knowledge of Islam which come from 2 very obvious resources, Al-Quran and Sunnah (words and actions of The Prophet). Those 2 resources can only be teach and interpreted by true Islamic scholars, true pious ‘ulama'.

As Muslim, we must realize that one can never learn and understand Islam through self defense or Silat. Anything that is good can be use as a tool of da'wah but can never be use to learn or understand Islam. Islam must be learn and understand using the way of the Sunnah. True ‘ulama are authorized in Islam as the only inheritor of The Prophet Muhammad (saw) way.

In truth learning Silat is actually an act of admitting our weaknesses, an effort in controlling ourselves physically and mentally and it is a way to train our physical body to obey tawakkal a'lAllah, fully reliance to Allah (swt). It is among the way of the syariat, the way of the Sunnah to learn and master the right self defense thus utilizing it with proper manner.

Silat can never be the goal in a Muslim's life. It is just among many knowledge tools that can be utilize for a good use. Don't let ourselves being obsessed with Silat but let ourselves completely be submerge into Allah (swt) command and Prophet Muhammad (saw) way which is the true teaching and practice of Islam.
